Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ) are a standardized way of tracking the development of your child. We formally go through your child’s questionnaires at the 9, 18, and 24 month visits. We are also implementing autism screening with the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT) at 18 and 24 months. When your child is 8 months old, please fill out the 8 month ASQ to bring to the 9 month well child visit. Please fill out the 18 and 24 month ASQ along with the M-CHAT and bring those to the 18 and 24 month well child visits. If you have developmental concerns at other ages, feel free to fill out the age-appropriate ASQ and make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your concerns.

Please note, this is only one of several ways in which we assess your child’s development. Additionally, there are broad ranges for what is “normal” development. Children can have several “sometimes” or “not yet” answers and still be well within the normal range. The M-CHAT is designed to maximize sensitivity (identify as many children with autism spectrum disorders as possible), which can result in false positive cases. These screening tools should only be looked at in the context of the whole child.
